Tex-Mex at its best – Chili’s, Inorbit, Vashi

When it come to Text-Mex food, one name  will never let you down. We frequent Chili’s, Powai as it is near our office but it has been a while since I last visited them. This time, my visit to Inorbit, Vashi brought that opportunity.

We started with Honey Melon Margarita and Tropical Sunrise. This refreshing drink had a dominating taste of honeymelon syrup, a type of muskmelon with a base of lime juice. Try only if you like muskmelon or want to have a musk melon flavored drink. Tropical Sunrise was a great concoction of pineapple and orange.

Homestyle Fries was an instant order for my 3-year-old.

Triple Dipper
Triple Dipper

We settled with Tripple Dipper and selected Chipotle Quesadilla Bites, Texas Cheese Poppers and Southwestern Rolls. These were served with different 3 dips, Avacado Rand Dressing, Chipotle Sour Cream and Chipotle Ranch Dressing. Triple Dipper is, in fact, a combination of their appetizers. Preferred over sticking to just one dish.

Molten Chocolate Cake
Molten Chocolate Cake

Molten Chocolate Cake was a pre-decided dessert as it had been a while we got a chance to indulge on that. We were having it after almost a gap of a few years and it was a sheer pleasure to have that same great taste, consistent from almost last 8+ years. This puts all run of the mill molten or choco lava cakes to shame.

The server was friendly and helpful but attentiveness left us a little low. We didn’t bother much as we were in no hurry. Yes, I would have appreciated more had it been more attentive.

Ambiance: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Food: 4/5
VFM: 4/5 (approx Rs. 2000/- all inclusive for two without alcohol)

Overall: 4/5

Must Try: Tripple Dipper, Molten Chocolate Cake

Hoppitimes @ Hoppipola, Powai, Mumbai

The theme of ‘Fun, Frolic and food alongside drinks’ is evidently getting more popular amongst gastro pubs lately and Hoppipola is undoubtedly a prominent name in the city and perhaps the only one in the vicinity.

The minimalistic and dimly lit interiors with loud music sets the mood for retiring at an end of the day over drinks optionally reading books or playing board games. Oh yes, and they have community table too for singles willing to mingle.

Long Island Ice Freeze (LIIT)
Long Island Ice Freeze (LIIT)

I started with Long Island Ice Freeze, the LIIT variant at Hoppipola. The blend of 5 whites (rum, vodka, tequila, gin and orange liquor) along with cola was potent enough to give me a buzz on an empty stomach. The presentation of LIIT in a bucket of dry ice, I felt was needless. LIIT should is best served in a tall and transparent glass.

Diablo
Diablo

Diablo, the Irish red ale was medium-bodied caramel flavored craft beer from White Owl brewery.

Cheesy Chilitato
Cheesy Chilitato

Masumfali Three Way, spicy peanuts salad, and Cheesy Chilitato were the perfect combination to start with. Cheesy Chilitato, the spiced fries with loads of cheese was good enough to warrant repeated orders.

Mojos potato wedges, sprinkled with tangy seasoning turned out to be competitors of Cheesy Chilitato.

The Harissan Paneer
The Harissan Paneer

The Harissan Paneer was paneer sticks cooked in spicy gravy and was tender as it should.

The Paneer Sanskari Tacos were an adopted variant of Tacos with Indian stuffing, primarily paneer. It definitely didn’t give best of both worlds and is avoidable.

No Cheese Pizza
No Cheese Pizza

The No Cheese Pizza was unusually shaped square thin crust pizza. The thin crust was indeed thin and crispy and tasted great with grilled vegetables like bell peppers, onions and mushrooms with a generous quantity of olives.

A Cup of Oriental (Veg.)
A Cup of Oriental (Veg.)

A Cup of Oriental (Veg.) was Thai green curry and rice. Fulfilling enough in taste and to the stomach to end the meal.

Overall food see-saws between good-enough to good and lacks an amount of greatness but this is justifiable as long as they serve great drinks, which is their forte.

Recommendations: Long Island Ice Freeze (LIIT), Cheesy Chilitato

Go doolally over beers! – Doolally Taproom, Andheri (W), Mumbai

Doolally from Pune, now has the 2nd outlet open in Andheri, with the first one being in Bandra. Fresh brews arrive from Pune, once on a couple of days to replenish the stocks.

OnTap

The place gets occupied with mixed crowds, casual hipsters and formal office goers retiring in the evening. The super casual ambiance is noisy, happening and bright. To complement your experience, along with having beers, you can optionally read books, surf net if you are alone or play board games if you are in a group.

Hefeweizen 2
Hefeweizen

We started with Hefeweizen, a German wheat beer, light in color and on the palate. For coffee aficionados, there is a Coffee Porter. Essentially a coffee flavoured beer so to say. Yes, try only if you like black coffee.

Apple Cider

Apple cider has an equal amount of haters and lovers. For some, it’s a fizzy apple cold-drink and for rest, including me, it’s something different to try than the usual. All the three beers we tried were light and had malty flavours than the usual strong, bitter and punchy taste. Those who like it strong may try Oatmeal Stout.

The food menu is short and hassle free. So even we restricted ourselves with only a couple of items.

A must have is House Fries accompanied by 5 type of dips which includes mayo, mango, garlic and mint. The piping hot thick fries will make other famous QSR fries look famine affected.

Chuchvara
Chuchvara

Chuchvara, the Uzbek steamed dumplings are stuffed with sauteed mushrooms and are quite spicy.

Both items were great in taste and equally great combination with beers.

With all inclusive prices, ‘What you see is what you pay!’ works greatly in favour of Doolally which doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Recommendations: Hefeweizen, Coffee Porter (Coffee lovers only!), House Fries.
